Monadic second-order model-checking on decomposable matroids

چکیده
A notion of branch-width may be defined for matroids, which generalizes the one known for graphs. We first give a proof of the polynomial time model checking of MSOM on representable matroids of bounded branch-width, by reduction to MSO on trees, much simpler than the one previously known. We deduce results about spectrum of MSOM formulas and enumeration on matroids of bounded branch-width. We also provide a link between our logical approach and a grammar that allows to build matroids of bounded branch-width. Finally we introduce a new class of non-necessarily representable matroids described by a grammar, on which MSOM is decidable in linear time.

Trees, grids, and MSO decidability: From graphs to matroids
Monadic second order (MSO) logic proved to be a useful tool in many areas of application, reaching from decidability and complexity to picture processing, correctness of programs and parallel processes. To characterize the structural borderline between decidability and undecidability is a classical research problem here. This problem is related to questions in computational complexity, especial...
متن کاملPractical algorithms for MSO model-checking on tree-decomposable graphs
In this survey, we review practical algorithms for graph-theoretic problems that are expressible in monadic second-order logic. Monadic second-order (MSO) logic allows quantifications over unary relations (sets) and can be used to express a host of useful graph properties such as connectivity, c-colorability (for a fixed c), Hamiltonicity and minor inclusion. A celebrated theorem in this area b...
متن کاملThe Complexity of First-Order and Monadic Second-Order Logic Revisited
The model-checking problem for a logic L on a class C of structures asks whether a given L-sentence holds in a given structure in C. In this paper, we give super-exponential lower bounds for fixed-parameter tractable model-checking problems for first-order and monadic second-order logic. We show that unless PTIME = NP, the model-checking problem for monadic second-order logic on finite words is...
متن کاملSpecial tree-width and the verification of monadic second-order graph pr operties
The model-checking problem formonadic second-order logic on graphs is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to tree-width and clique-width. The proof constructs finite deterministic automata from monadic second-order sentences, but this produces automata of hyper-exponential sizes, and this computation is not avoidable. To overcome this difficulty, we propose to consider particular monadic sec...
متن کاملOn the model-checking of monadic second-order formulas with edge set quantifications
We extend clique-width to graphswithmultiple edges. We obtain fixed-parameter tractable model-checking algorithms for certain monadic second-order graph properties that depend on the multiplicities of edges, with respect to this ‘‘new’’ clique-width. We define special tree-width, the variant of tree-width relative to tree-decompositions such that the boxes that contain a vertex are on a path or...
